Good Evening Post 550,
First and foremost I would like to thank each and everyone of you who attended our All-Department meeting on August 5th. I am personally so proud of each and every one of you and the hard work you put into our Post to honor each other and honor of our Vets!
I think our meeting was a good start in having some open communication … and just as a reminder, we are here to support each other and build each other up.
Recently, a bill so named the Legion Act, was signed into law on July 30, 2019 by President Trump, opening up membership to the American Legion to almost 6 million veterans nationwide.
Instead of the traditional 7 war eras, this bill recognizes only two.
1941 - Present
This is significant because no longer are these considered so called ‘conflicts’ but instead it recognizes that our country has been at ‘war’ since 1941, therefore recognizing the official veteran status of all who have served!

WHAT IT MEANS FOR POST 550
With the Legion Act now signed into Law, our new Judge Advocate, Dan Warren, has already started the process of updating our Post By-Laws to reflect these changes. The Executive Committee (EC) will be reviewing our by-laws and voting for their approval on August 26th and then we will bring them to the General Membership during our regular meeting on September 9th.
Once approved, the leaders of each Post department will be receiving a copy to review with your members.
It’s good to have a reminder of the structure of our Post.
DEPARTMENT COMMANDER CHALLENGE
We have been given the challenge by our Department Commander, Jeff Perkins, to bring Post 550 to 105% membership by March 2020.
Thanks to Past Post Commander Marlin Rath, we made it to 107% in 2019. With the amazing Veterans and people we have at this post… I have no doubt that we will even exceed that number in the coming year!
But… in doing so, we are simply not going to concentrate on the nickles and noses…but the lives behind the number, because that is what matters most!
GOING BACK TO OUR ROOTS
The American Legion was founded on the ideal of creating an organization where Veterans had a place for comradery and support with other Vets and those who love our Vets. And that is going to be our focus moving forward.
So, now it’s time to get to work.
